Memphis Depay is facing the Barcelona axe amid links over a move back to the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur.

Memphis looked to be a smart signing for Barcelona on a free transfer last summer.

Sure, the Dutchman failed to live up to his billing at Manchester United but he got back on track at Lyon.

76 goals in 178 games for Lyon meant Memphis was an in-demand free agent, but it was Barcelona who won the race.

Fast forward a year and it looks like Memphis is already being pushed out of the Camp Nou amid links to Tottenham.

Memphis Depay is facing the Barcelona axe

Memphis hit 13 goals in 38 games last season, which isn’t a terrible record but Barcelona may be seeking better.

Barcelona have been splashing the cash this summer despite their well-documented financial problems.

Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha have come in, whilst the likes of Ansu Fati, Ferran Torres, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ousmane Dembele remain in the Barcelona ranks.

It’s therefore difficult to see how Memphis can feature for Barcelona and an exit is now being pushed.

Spanish newspaper AS report that Memphis has met with manager Xavi to discuss his future.

The 28-year-old has allegedly been told that he either needs to leave Barcelona or face sitting on the bench this season with Xavi making his position clear.

Memphis is bound to have suitors and one of them looks likely to be Tottenham.

SPORT claim that Tottenham have been chasing Memphis of late and were taking steps towards negotiating a deal with Barcelona.

The problem was that Barcelona wanted £17million whereas Tottenham would only pay £14.5million, leaving a gap in valuation.

Memphis allegedly wasn’t too keen on returning to England having hardly enjoyed his time with Manchester United.

Yet with his role at Barcelona clearly diminishing, Memphis may need to decide between sitting on the bench or heading to London with Tottenham no doubt looking at his situation closely.
