Middlesbrough head coach Chris Wilder left Djed Spence out of the team against York City on Friday, amid speculation that Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur want to sign the former Nottingham Forest loanee.
Tottenham Hotspur linked with Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence
Tottenham have been strongly linked with a move for Middlesbrough youngster Spence in the summer transfer window.
The London Evening Standard reported this week that Tottenham and Middlesbrough are continuing talks over a £15-£20 million move for Spence, who can operate as a right-back, right wing-back or right-winger.
Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold has said that all parties are hopeful that a deal will be struck soon.

Left out of squad
Interestingly, Spence – described as “outstanding” and “absolutely fantastic” by former Chelsea player Andy Townsend on talkSPORT (5:43pm, March 21, 2022) – was left out of Middlesbrough’s pre-season friendly match against York City on Friday.
Wilder used a different XI in each half, and there was no space for the 21-year-old in either.
This decision suggests that the former Sheffield United manager expects Spence to leave the Riverside Stadium and is planing for next season without him.
Spence made 41 starts and one substitute appearance in the Championship during his loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season.
The youngster scored two goals and gave four assists in those games.
