Arsenal remain keen on Lisandro Martinez, and they’ve drawn up a rather interesting plan for if he is signed.
The Gunners have made two bids for the Argentine now, and while neither offer has been accepted as of yet, they remain keen on the Ajax star.
In fact, Arsenal are so keen on Martinez that they know which position they will play him in if he joins the club.
Indeed, according to The Athletic, Arsenal’s plan is to use Martinez as a left-back if he arrives from Amsterdam this summer.
This is an interesting plan for Martinez and Arsenal. The Argentine isn’t a natural left-back, playing there just 12 times in his career, while the Gunners are already well-stocked in that position with Kieran Tierney.
Of course, Martinez is a versatile player who will be able to play in the heart of defense or as a defensive midfielder, but according to this report, Arsenal, first and foremost view him as a left-back option.
It will be interesting to see what happens to Tierney if Martinez arrives to play this role. The Scot didn’t enjoy his best season last term, and with Martinez likely to cost north of £35m, it’s unlikely that he’ll be signed just to sit on the bench.
Could Tierney drop to the bench despite being one of Arsenal’s best performers of the post-Wenger era? Well, that would be a harsh decision, but as we all know, football can be a cutthroat sport and if Martinez arrives, Tierney’s spot in the XI could well be in jeopardy.
The ‘excellent’ defender may well be Arsenal’s new starting left-back if the Gunners can beat Manchester United to his signature.
