The Independent claim Frank Lampard has chosen to turn down the chance to sign Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks for Everton – after doing ‘extensive due diligence’ on the England international this summer.

Winks, 26, has been ever-present for Tottenham since breaking into the first team – clocking up 202 games for his boyhood club. But this summer, Winks is likely to leave Spurs after the signing of Yves Bissouma.

The Spurs no.8 has already fallen down the pecking during Antonio Conte’s reign, even before the signing of Bissouma. Rodrigo Bentancur arrived in January and has formed a superb partnership with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

So, a move to Everton was on the cards for Winks. Reports claim that Winks is keen on a move to the Toffees this summer, however, Lampard has made his decision – and it is not good news for Winks.

Having done due diligence on the £91,000-a-week (SalarySport) midfielder, Lampard has decided against signing the England ace. It leaves Winks observing his options, and with for other interest.

A blow not only for Winks, who would have surely enjoyed a move to Everton and reunite with Dele Alli – but for Spurs too. They are about to take their spending towards £100million with the signing of Richarlison.

Spurs might have hoped Everton would pay in the region of £20million for Winks to take the edge of their summer spending so far. Now, they will have to wait, like Winks, for another club to come calling and sign him.

Reports on Thursday claim that Leeds United are also in the race to nab Winks with Kalvin Phillips set to join Manchester City. It would surely give Winks regular game time.
