Newcastle are signing Sven Botman – and Tottenham Hotspur will inadvertently benefit as they prepare to sell Steven Bergwijn to Ajax.
The Magpies are starting to make their presence felt in the summer transfer window.
Matt Targett has been signed permanently and goalkeeper Nick Pope represents great business after signing from Burnley.
Those aren’t particularly flashy signings but they add quality to the Newcastle side – and a huge deal is on the verge of completion.
Newcastle are signing Sven Botman
Newcastle are on the verge of finally landing Lille defender Botman after weeks and even months of chasing the Dutchman.
Botman is flying into Newcastle today to complete his medical ahead of a £31million move to St James’ Park.
This is a massive addition for Newcastle. Botman is one of the top young defenders in Europe and managing to sign him is a major signal of intent.
Lille will rake in most of the cash but Ajax also stand to benefit.
Botman came through the Ajax ranks before leaving to join Lille back in the summer of 2020.
Algemeen Dagblad now report that Ajax will be able to bring in ‘a few million’ by way of a sell-on clause inserted in Botman’s sale.

It’s even suggested that this cash injection for Ajax will help them go and sign Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn.
Ajax are set to bring in major funds by selling Sebastien Haller to Borussia Dortmund, but that deal isn’t done yet.
The Botman sell-on clause will now allow Ajax to go and pay up for Bergwijn in a deal that has been dragging on for a while now.
Bergwijn has no future at Tottenham and wants to return to the Netherlands, but Ajax haven’t yet been able to meet the asking price.
Tottenham may not love that Newcastle are adding a quality defender in Botman, but that deal has a domino effect that will mean Spurs bring in millions for Bergwijn.
