Newcastle United have been joined by Aston Villa in the race to sign Alessio Romagnoli.

The 27-year-old Italy international will be available for free from next week onward, as his AC Milan contract comes to an end.

According to SS Lazio News, Newcastle have offered the player a contract worth £66,000 per week.

However, now Aston Villa are in the running, too.

Well, that is according to the print edition of Corriere dello Sport [24/06, page 12].

According to the Italian outlet, Villa boss Steven Gerrard is also keen on signing the Italian powerhouse this summer, having already brought Diego Carlos to the Midlands outfit.

And honestly, the Villans have an excellent opportunity.

Despite being a weaker outfit than Newcastle when it comes to finances, the Magpies might not need Romagnoli very shortly.

That’s because Italian journalist has revealed that Sven Botman is going to St James’s Park after they agreed a transfer fee with Lille.

This one has been in the pipeline for a while and that’s why it could benefit Aston Villa.

If Newcastle – who signed Dan Burn in January – get Botman then there’ll be little need to also go for Romagnoli which, in theory, frees up the path for Gerrard and the Villans.
