Italian outlet SS Lazio.News claim that Newcastle have tabled an offer of £66,000 a week to sign AC Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli – with his contract at the Serie A champions set to expire next week.
Romagnoli, 27, held aloft the Serie A trophy last season as Milan saw off the competition from 2020-21 winners Inter Milan. But he was only a bit-part player, owing to numerous injuries. He managed just 26 outings.

Now, his contract is about to expire and it seems Milan have given up in trying to keep their club captain. Lazio have been strongly linked with a move, with Maurizio Sarri’s side leading the race for the Italy defender.
Newcastle have been linked in the past – but reports state that he is nearing a move to Lazio. However, new reports now say that Newcastle have tabled an offer of £66,000 a week to try and tempt him to move to Tyneside.
Newcastle have tabled offer for Romagnoli
It would be a wonderful bit of business. Newcastle and the club’s hierarchy have been applauded for their work in the window; not giving in and paying over the odds despite their enormous wealth.
Nick Pope has come to the club for £10million from Burnley, which is widely seen as a bargain. Matty Targett for £15million is also superb business, ending Newcastle’s long-term hunt to solve their left-back issues.
Now, they need a centre-back – and £32million talks for Sven Botman are stalling. While Romagnoli is older and slightly injury prone, he is just as good as Botman in terms of quality. On a free, he would be a stunning signing.
