Christopher Nkunku has been the subject of plenty of transfer speculation in recent months, but it seems as though all of these rumours can now be put to bed as he’s just signed a new contract with RB Leipzig.
Indeed, Nkunku has extended his deal with the Bundesliga club until 2026, and that likely means that he’ll be staying in Germany for at least the next year.
This news will come as something of a blow for a number of Premer League clubs, but perhaps most notably, Arsenal.
Indeed, the Gunners were apparently willing to spend a club-record £100m fee on Nkunku, but now that he’s signed a new deal, a transfer seems to be off the table.
Of course, that isn’t to say that a move is absolutely impossible. After all, we’ve seen players leave clubs just weeks after signing contracts in the past.
Martin Demichelis notably left Atletico Madrid for Manchester just after signing a deal, while similar happened with Thiago Silva who left AC Milan just a fortnight after signing a new contract in 2012. While this is a rare scenario, if Arsenal do stump up £100m for the ‘dangerous’ Frenchman, Leipzig will have something to think about.
However, Arsenal may want to wait before making their move for Nkunku.
Indeed, recent reports prior to this contract being signed indicated that the Frenchman will have a £50m release clause inserted into this deal that comes into effect next summer, so if the striker enjoys another 20-goal campaign, he may well be available for a bargain fee this time next year.
Of course, whether or not those reports were accurate remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, Nkunku is a player to keep an eye on in the coming years.
