Liverpool and Newcastle United target Christopher Nkunku will reportedly sign a new contract with RB Leipzig that includes a €60m (£50m) release clause that activates in the summer of 2023.

According to the Leipziger Volkszeitung, the France international has been swayed to remain with the German side this summer following an outstanding year with Leipzig that saw Nkunku bag 34 goals in all competitions and be crowned Bundesliga Player of the Year.

After such an incredible campaign, many of Europe’s top clubs are now interested in signing Nkunku, with Liverpool and Newcastle the most recent sides to join the race for the 24-year-old attacker, though the former PSG talent is now set to sign a new contract with Leipzig.

With the east German side set to compete in the UEFA Champions League once again next season, Leipzig are under no real pressure to sell Nkunku this summer, and Domenico Tedesco’s side have seemingly managed to tie their star asset down to a new deal.

Indeed, Nkunku signing a new contract with Leipzig is a huge coup for the Bundesliga side, especially given just how many clubs were interested in signing the Frenchman after what has been a record-breaking year for the attacker, who has mainly been played as a midfielder for most of his career.

Yet now after an incredible goalscoring campaign for Leipzig, Nkunku can take his game to a whole new level if he is able to hit similar numbers next season, which will likely see a Premier League club activate his new £50m release clause in the summer of 2023.

Nkunku’s stock has raised considerably over the past 12 months, with the Leipzig talisman now one of the hottest properties in all of Europe, and even after signing a new contract with the German side, there’s no chance the Frenchman will be sticking around with the Bundesliga club in the future.

After all, the numbers Nkunku hit last season were simply unprecedented, and if the attacker can repeat these incredible figures again next season, the 24-year-old will be on his way to a top Premier League side for a cool £50m.
