Jonjoe Kenny has confirmed on Instagram that he is joining Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin after his Everton contract expired – prompting James Maddison and Dom Calvert-Lewin to react on Instagram.
Kenny, 25, leaves Everton 16 years after joining the club as a boy. The right-back broke into the senior side to play 69 times, but has failed to hold down a regular spot and now, he has decided to leave the club permanently.
He has joined Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin. His stock is high in Germany, having impressed during a loan spell with Schalke in 2019-20. Kenny played 34 times, having a hand in five goals for one of Germany’s biggest clubs.
Kenny took to Instagram on Tuesday to confirm his exit from Everton. He thanked the club, its staff and the supporters for his time at Everton – stating his heart will always remain at Goodison Park.
Maddison and Calvert-Lewin react: Kenny joining Hertha Berlin
Kenny has left Everton on a free transfer, perhaps somewhat of a shame given the potential of the defender. But he has never been able to live up to the initial hype – and has now signed a three-year deal with Hertha Berlin.
Everton have Seamus Coleman on the books still, while Nathan Patterson was signed from Rangers back in January. It makes sense for Kenny to depart then, with Ben Godfrey also able to play on the right.
Responding to his post on Instagram, Leicester and England playmaker Maddison applauded him – while Calvert-Lewin was one of a number of Everton players to also respond.
