CalcioMercatoWeb make the quite surprising claim that Newcastle want Inter Milan duo Hakan Calhanoglu and Denzel Dumfries in a double deal worth £51million. Both players were excellent for Inter during 2021-22.

Calhanoglu, 28, made the surprise move from Milan to Inter last summer – and has excelled for the Nerrazzuri. The German-born Turkey international had a hand in 21 goals from midfield last term, scoring eight and creating 13.

Dumfries, meanwhile, joined Inter from PSV. The Netherlands star clocked up 45 appearances for Inter, scoring five goals and laying on seven assists from right wing-back. Both have been crucial to Inter over the last 12 months.

Reports earlier this year said Newcastle were looking at ex-Hamburg man Calhanoglu, while Tottenham have been looking at Dumfiries. But the new report says Newcastle are planning a double offer for the Inter duo.

Indeed, the report says Newcastle are ready to part with €60million (£51million) for Calhanoglu and Dumfries. It would be an equal split to sign both players, meaning €30million (£25.5million) each for the duo.

It would be a quite sensational move. Dumfries is arguably one of the best right wing-backs in world football – scoring goals and creating them, but also defensively astute given his incredible pace allows him to get back in.

Calhanoglu is renowned for his playmaking ability. Not only that, though, but his long-range shooting and set-piece ability. Yes, he is 28, but he is a wonderful technician and improves most Premier League clubs.

If Newcastle could sign one of these players, it would be a masterstroke. If they could get both this summer, then Dan Ashworth has well and truly arrived with one of the business moves of the entire window.
