According to Gianluca Di Marzio, AC Milan playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu is nearing a new deal with the club amid links to Newcastle United.

It’s claimed that a new contract is ‘close’ completion after a ‘flurry of talks’ on Tuesday morning – and those negotiations didn’t involve his agent.

Calhanoglu spoke personally to Milan about a deal, and whilst the deal isn’t yet done, it seems likely that he will stay put after all.

The 26-year-old’s contract was set to expire this coming summer, but Milan have been fighting for an extension after a strong season.

Calhanoglu has hit six goals and 11 assists in all competitions, playing as a number 10 or cutting in from the left flank.

The news may be a blow to Newcastle United, with The Chronicle recently reporting that the Magpies have held a long-standing interest in the Turk.

Newcastle may have been hoping to pull off a bold move for Calhanoglu by luring him to St James’ Park on a free transfer this summer, adding real creativity to Steve Bruce’s side.

Instead, it seems that Calhanoglu will stay at the San Siro, and leave Bruce and co to go back to the drawing board in search of reinforcements.
