Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter to react after Liverpool agreed a €100m (£85m) deal to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica.

What’s the story?

Well, the 22-year-old scored two goals against Liverpool in the Champions League last season, and now, he is close to becoming Jürgen Klopp’s second signing of the summer after Fabio Carvalho.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Reds will pay Benfica a guaranteed €80m (£68m), with the remaining €20m (£17m) made up of add-ons.

The reliable Italian journalist adds that Liverpool are now preparing the paperwork for Nunez to sign in the morning, with a five-year contract already verbally agreed with the Uruguay international.

After hearing the news, Lineker seemingly paid reference to the recent arrival of Luis Diaz, as well as the impending departure of Sadio Mane, to state that Liverpool are continuing to evolve.

Make no mistake about it, this is a significant moment for Liverpool. Many wondered what would happen to the iconic frontline of Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah as they aged.

Now, it seems Salah will be the last man standing, as Mane nears a move to Bayern Munich, and Firmino looks set to drop out of the starting XI for Nunez.

Liverpool believe in Darwin Nunez

In our view, Jürgen Klopp must have an astonishing amount of faith in Nunez, as Liverpool are parting with a significant amount of money to secure his signature.

Additionally, it was only as recently as the 2020/21 campaign in which the South American scored just 13 goals in 43 games.

Of course, Nunez then went on to score 34 goals in 41 outings last term, although a total package of £85m is a lot to spend on a player who has only really had one outstanding season so far.

Nevertheless, at the age of just 22, the Uruguayan’s value could even increase if he has an impressive debut campaign in the Premier League, and Liverpool would have an elite forward on their hands for the next decade.

It is a risky move, although it is also quite evident that Klopp trusts Nunez to shine.
