Speaking on The Done Deal Show, CBS journalist Ben Jacobs has been speaking about Gareth Bale and some tentative links to Newcastle United.

The Welsh winger has just left Real Madrid and he’s free to join any other club as a free agent.

Bale has been linked with every club under the sun from Cardiff City to Getafe, and inevitably, Newcastle’s name has cropped up.

According to Jacobs, the link between Bale and Newcastle has come directly from the chairman, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, who enjoyed watching Bale at Real Madrid and would like to see a marquee name arrive on Tyneside.

What’s been said?

Jacobs spoke about Bale and Newcastle.

“Gareth Bale has been vaguely linked to Newcastle, but there have been 100 other clubs, I remember engaging with Newcastle fans on this in January, and a lot of them didn’t want him. The link between Bale and Newcastle comes directly from Yasir Al-Rumayyan who enjoyed watching Bale at Real Madrid and would like a marquee name, but there’s not much too that and Newcastle have made no active approaches,” Jacobs said.

Marquee

If Newcastle’s chairman wants a marquee signing, then he can’t do much better than Gareth Bale.

The five-time Champions League winner is one of football’s bona fide superstars, and at the age of 32, he still has a lot to offer.

However, as Jacobs says, Dan Ashworth and Amanda Staveley probably don’t see things the same way. Newcastle haven’t gone after these massive names thus far, and as we’ve seen at Madrid, Bale isn’t always the most committed footballer around.

It would be a blockbuster signing, but as the January window showed, Newcastle are savvier than this.
