Steve Nicol has claimed that Gareth Bale’s ‘ego’ might get in the way of him wanting to join a Premier League club like Tottenham, as he told ESPN.
The 32-year-old will be looking for a new club this summer, after Wales qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, as Nicol suggested that Cardiff City should take the Tottenham-linked player on board because he’s not good enough for the Premier League.
The Bluebirds are sitting in the Championship, with Bale being a Cardiff-born lad, it isn’t a surprise that their name is being thrown into the hat.
There were some suggestions that if Wales didn’t qualify for the 2022 World Cup, then Bale would have retired, so will he sign a long-term contract at his new club? Or just a short one?
Either way, Nicol made it clear that Bale isn’t good enough for the top-flight now, as he pointed out that he didn’t contribute much the last time he was at Spurs.
“We can’t kid ourselves, it’s unfortunate that the last two or three years that Gareth Bale has made us question his motives for playing in Madrid,” said Nicol.
“Unfortunately, it has carried through as far as we concerned to the international stage. But Bale, for what he has done over his career, absolutely has earned the right and turn up by say ‘I won’t be on the grass today’
“Go somewhere you are going to go and play. I don’t know Bale, but I think, looking from the outside, his biggest problem is his ego.
“He’s 32, not 36 or 37. There are plenty of them still playing at the top, by the way, especially Benzema.
“Forget what league it is, just get playing – If I am Cardiff (I would want him), If I am in the Premier League, no – did he contribute (at Spurs)? Can you tell me who they (his goals) were against?”

WHAT TYPE OF CONTRACT WILL BALE SIGN?
Those will be dreaming most about signing Bale will be Cardiff supporters because of the impact he can have on the club.
But what type of contract will the Welshman sign, regardless of which club he ends up at?
Will it be a few years? One-year deal? Up until January of next year? Or just until the World Cup?
Either way, his ‘world-class’ talents will be more beneficial to Cardiff than Tottenham, but that doesn’t mean he still can’t do a job for the London club.
