Premier League giants Newcastle United held talks to sign Aleksandr Golovin from Monaco during the January transfer window, the Russia international’s agent tells MetaRatings

It is no secret that Rafa Benitez hoped to lure Golovin to St James’ Park during his spell on Tyneside. But it seems that the goateed gaffer is not the only Newcastle manager who tried and failed to get his mitts on a man who exploded onto the scene at the 2018 Russian World Cup.

According to Championat, the Magpies saw a £34 million bid turned down by Monaco.

And while Golovin’s agent refused to be drawn on the figures in question, he did confirm that there was truth to reports suggesting that his Principality-based client could have ended up alongside Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and co in Eddie Howe’s squad.

Will Newcastle United return for Monaco’s Aleksandr Golovin?

“(The rumours are) definitely not fake. Negotiations between Monaco and Newcastle on Sasha Golovin (happened in January),” says agent Alexander Klyuev.

“Of course, I can’t reveal the details.”

Klyuev adds that Golovin would be interested in a move to English soil at some point in the future.

“We don’t even consider (a return to the Russian Premier League). More England or Spain. Moreover, we had offers from clubs from there,” he said back in May

Golovin took his time to get going at Monaco but has finally started to live up to those early expectations in recent times. The versatile playmaker shone as Niko Kovac’s side flirted with Ligue 1 glory in 2021/22 and backed that up with an impressive nine assists last term.

Golovin was also linked with a move to West Ham in January but Monaco’s vice-president Oleg Petrov soon poured water on that particular fire.

“So far, there have been no offers from West Ham for Golovin,” Petrov explained.

“Are we ready to let him go in the winter? It all depends on the offers of the English club. But I think we’ll hardly let him go now.”
