A Vinicius goal v Liverpool has won the Champions League for Real Madrid tonight.
Liverpool suffered a 1-0 defeat by the Spanish giants in Paris and it was a goal from their Brazilian which sealed the victory.
He struck on 59 minutes following a first half which was utterly dominated by Jurgen Klopp’s outfit, vying for a second Champions League title since 2019.
And Alan Shearer has blamed Trent Alexander-Arnold for going to sleep when he should’ve been marking the South American wizard.
Shearer, who said earlier in May that the Kirkby gem wasn’t defensively sound, told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport: “Trent Alexander-Arnold goes to sleep. He does not realise that Vinicius Jr was in behind him.”
It’s a cruel old game but really, they only have themselves to blame for the Vinicius goal v Liverpool.
They were much the better of both sides throughout a one-sided first half and although Thibaut Courtois was in exceptional form, the Premier League outfit still could and should’ve been more clinical when they had the chances.
Despite his performance, Courtois is still only human and if the Reds were at their best, they would’ve beaten him sooner or later, as they’ve done to so many goalkeepers this season.
In the end, the English giants, who this time last week had genuine hopes of a quadruple, only won two trophies this season, the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
It’s still a very decent campaign for Liverpool but, given what they could’ve won, well the supporters – not least Klopp and the players – might feel shortchanged by it somewhat.
