‘Let’s not forget’: Shearer says there’s one thing we must keep in mind about Alexander-Arnold

Speaking on the Premier League’s YouTube channel, Alan Shearer has been discussing Trent Alexander-Arnold and the idea that he’s not defensively sound.

The right-back is undoubtedly one of the most talented players in England, but, as with any footballer, he has his critics.

Many believe that Alexander-Arnold isn’t good enough defensively, especially when he’s compared to his peers such as Kyle Walker and Reece James.

However, Shearer has batted away that criticism, stating that we mustn’t forget that Alexander-Arnold has been a part of a team with one of the best defensive records in the country this year.

Shearer was discussing Alexander-Arnold and his supposed defensive shortcomings.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold is next, he’s not been amongst the assists as much in the second-half of the season, but looking at the numbers he’s still creating close to three chances per 90 minutes, the second-best ranking in the league behind Kevin De Bruyne. People highlight his defensive qualities as an area to improve, but let’s not forget that he’s part of one of the stingiest defences in the league, and given his contributions going forward, I think he strikes a great balance,” Shearer said

“Alexander-Arnold is world-class, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he regains his Young Player of the Season crown after missing out last term.”

Not an issue

Could Alexander-Arnold be better defensively? Of course he could, but is it an issue? Absolutely not.

Think about it, when have Alexander-Arnold’s defensive shortcomings actually cost Liverpool? The Reds have only conceded 24 league goals this season, and even when Alexander-Arnold has a tough time at the back, Liverpool are largely fine.

Gabriel Martinelli ran the full-back ragged at the Emirates a few weeks ago, and the Brazilian earned all sorts of praise for that performance. However, Liverpool still came away with a clean sheet and all three points.

The reality is that Liverpool’s centre-halves and goalkeeper are good enough to cover for Alexander-Arnold, and his attacking output makes him one of the most valuable players in this squad.
