Tottenham Hotspur are keeping Dejan Kulusevki – but just on loan rather than as a permanent signing this summer in a curious move.

Tottenham needed signings in January and left it late to bring in two major additions.

Fabio Paratici managed to strike a double deal with former club Juventus for Rodrigo Bentancur and Kulusevski.

Both players have made a huge impact for Tottenham and have been vital in securing Champions League football.

Bentancur joined permanently on deadline but Kulusevski actually only signed on loan.

Many have been expecting Tottenham to activate their purchase option on Kulusevski this summer.

However, Fabrizio Romano has taken to Twitter to suggest that this may not actually be the case.

Romano claims that Kulusevski will eventually become a permanent Tottenham player.

Yet the current plan is for Kulusevski to remain on loan for next season rather than buying him right now.

Romano suggests that Kulusevski’s loan deal turns permanent if Tottenham quality for the Champions League next season and if he plays 20 games.

If those things don’t happen, Tottenham have the option to sign Kulusevski permanently rather than an obligation.

Let’s be real here; Kulusevski will be a Tottenham player for years to come.

This decision is likely just down to saving money right now and allowing Antonio Conte to bring in other signings.

Tottenham will be turning Cristian Romero’s loan move from Atalanta permanent this summer, which will be a huge outlay.

If Tottenham don’t have to turn the Kulusevski deal permanent right now but can still have him for next season, then they may as well just delay the permanent move until next year.

Tottenham fans may want the security of a full-time deal right now after Kulusevski racked up five goals and eight assists in just 18 Premier League games.

Yet if delaying a move can help fund another big signing this summer, fans would surely give their backing.
