According to Marca, Manchester United are now ready to spend £43m in a bid to bring Manchester City and Tottenham target Pau Torres to the Premier League.

What’s the story?

Well, this would be quite the signing for Erik ten Hag.

Torres came close to joining Tottenham in 2021, although he decided to stay with his boyhood side Villarreal after they qualified for the Champions League.

It proved to be a wise decision, as Unai Emery impressively guided the Yellow Submarine to the semi-finals, where they suffered defeat to Liverpool.

Now, Manchester United and Manchester City have joined the race, with Spurs still keen to sign the Spain international.

Marca believe the Red Devils are willing to spend up to £43m on Torres, with Ten Hag desperate to sign the 25-year-old at all costs.

It comes after Tottenham scouted the centre-back during Villarreal’s Champions League semi-final defeat to Liverpool.

Interestingly, Torres is said to have a £50m release clause written into his contract, which Manchester United aren’t far off with a £43m offer in the pipeline.

In 47 appearances this season, the Villarreal No.4 scored six goals, while also providing one assist.

In our view, it would be quite embarrassing for Spurs to miss out on Torres, having done so much groundwork on the defender.

As aforesaid, Tottenham tracked the Spaniard in 2021 shortly after Fabio Paratici arrived as Director of Football to assist Nuno Espirito Santo.

It has even been said that Spurs are confident of securing his signature, so it would be a real blow to now lose out.

Antonio Conte did a remarkable job in securing Champions League football for next season, and with Tottenham’s centre-back department lacking quality depth, Torres is needed at Hotspur Way.

Keep an eye on this saga, as anything could happen this summer.
