Aston Villa will reportedly have no Emi Martinez v Manchester City today in a development which has left Liverpool supporter seething on Twitter.

Liverpool could finish the day as Premier League champions, but a lot is riding on their legendary former player Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard brings his Aston Villa side to the Etihad Stadium this afternoon and if the Sky Blues drop points, combined with Jurgen Klopp’s side beating Wolves at Anfield, then the title will be returning to Merseyside.

However, there’s a problem.

Gaston Edul, a reporter from tYc Sports in Argentina, has claimed on Twitter that Gerrard will be resting the former Arsenal goalkeeper against Pep Guardiola’s troops.

And that, if true, greatly hinders Liverpool’s chances of pipping the Citizens to the Premier League title when you consider how big of a player the South American stopper is.

Here’s how some Reds fans reacted to the rumour on social media:

Is Gerrard resting Emi Martinez v Manchester City?

Well, that’s certainly what the talk is about.

The team news for the City – Aston Villa clash will be released in around half-an-hour at 3pm, but there’s no denying that Liverpool fans are right to feel slightly more pessimistic if it transpires that the 29-year-old isn’t starting.

That’s because Martinez has certainly been one of the Premier League’s finest goalkeepers over the past two years, winning Aston Villa’s Player of the Year last term which speaks volumes.

Liverpool are already underdogs, with Andy Gray revealing that he feels Guardiola will get his troops over the line, but the odds plummet even further if the South American stopper is absent.

We’ll wait and see.
