Benjamin Siegrist has announced that he will be leaving Dundee United this summer on a free transfer – which will surely perk the ears of Celtic and Rangers. Both Old Firm clubs have been linked with Siegrist recently.

Siegrist, 30, has ended a four-year spell at Tannadice in which he has clocked up 145 appearances for United. In that time, he has conceded the exact same number in terms of goals – but also kept 52 clean sheets.

Instead of signing a new deal, the Swiss goalkeeper will leave on a free. In January, both Celtic and Rangers were linked. The Scotsman reported that Celtic have taken a look, while The Mail say Rangers want him.

Now, Siegrist has taken to Instagram to confirm that he will be leaving Dundee United and is now available on a free transfer. He underlined his delight at securing promotion and European qualification in his time.

Siegrist on a free: Celtic and Rangers will be interested…

Celtic could do with better cover for Joe Hart. The England stopper has been one of the signings of the season, but the step from him to Scott Bain and Vasilis Barkas – who is likely to go – is considerable. Siegrist bridges the gap.

Rangers possibly need him more. Allan McGregor may retire after this weekend’s Scottish Cup final, with his contract ending this month. Now 40, it might be his final game. Ross Wilson recently said it is up to him.

Both need Siegrist, Rangers slightly more so. Now available on a free transfer, there is sure to be a scramble to land the player’s signature.
