Celtic want Japhet Matondo – but face a battle with Leeds United for the Cardiff City youngster’s signature this summer.

The Bhoys wrestled back the Scottish Premiership title from Rangers this season and will be seeking another lengthy spell at the top.

Ange Postecoglou needs first-team additions but you can’t rule out more young talent arriving at Parkhead.

The likes of Tobi Oluwayemi, Bosun Lawal and Joey Dawson have all arrived in recent times.

There have been reports of Celtic’s interest in Shrewsbury Town talent Ben Crompton and now Matondo can be added to the wish list.

Celtic want Japhet Matondo

Football Scotland now report that Celtic have registered their interest in signing Cardiff City talent Matondo.

Matondo may only be 16 but he has already played for Cardiff’s Under-23’s with major excitement building over him.

Matondo is a winger and could be snapped up as a replacement for Ben Doak, the Celtic teenager who will join Liverpool this summer.

The major appeal for Celtic is that cross-border compensation means that Matondo can be signed by the Bhoys for just £130,000.

That could be an absolute bargain and a fraction of the price Cardiff would otherwise demand.

Matondo’s brother Rabbi already plays for Wales and was actually on the Manchester City books before heading to Schalke.

That move hasn’t worked for Rabbi and Japhet will now have to pick his next club very carefully.

Leeds United are also thought to be interested with VIctor Orta regularly looking to sign young talent for the future.

Leeds can’t benefit from the same compensation rules as Celtic though and would face a much bigger bill.

Cardiff may still hope to keep hold of Matondo but fending off clubs like Celtic and Leeds is never easy.

A decision is expected in the coming weeks with Matondo facing a tough call on whether to stay in South Wales or move away.
