Tottenham have received a boost in their pursuit of the top four after Arsenal failed to beat Newcastle on Monday. If they do get fourth, Tottenham fans can expect signings – Ilkay Gundogan should be considered.
With rock-bottom Norwich to play and only a win needed, Antonio Conte’s side are now firm favourites to get fourth. The Italian’s arrival was likely to bring in new additions – and Champions League football even more so.
A midfielder is likely to be high on the list of priorities for Conte, with cover needed for Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. In a World Cup year, Harry Winks may want to depart and Oliver Skipp has been injured.
Tottenham should consider Gundogan, Manchester City to sell
Meanwhile, Manchester City might be about to hand Spurs the perfect midfielder signing. The Mail reports that City have informed Gundogan he can leave the club – with his contract about to expire, in June 2023.
The Germany international has dropped down the pecking order at City, starting just 20 of City’s 37 Premier League games. He would be affordable for Spurs, given he was bought for just £21million by City.
Earning £140,000 a week (Spotrac) at City, he is also affordable in terms of wages for Spurs. His goals from deep is something Spurs lack, but he also offers a defensive screen and deep-lying playmaker abilities Conte wants.
If Tottenham get fourth, which is now looking likely, Spurs need a marquee signing in midfield and Gundogan fits the profile. With City looking to sell, surely, Spurs have to consider luring the “phenomenal” talent south.
