Arsenal knew they simply had to win at Newcastle on Monday night.
Losing 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur last week was a blow before then seeing Spurs beat Burnley 1-0.
From being four points ahead of Tottenham, Arsenal were suddenly two points behind their North London rivals.

Arsenal may now miss out on Tottenham target Youri Tielemans
One target Arsenal were seemingly hoping to sign is Leicester City ace Tielemans.
Voetbalkrant in Tielemans’ native Belgium reported just last week that Arsenal were in talks to sign Tielemans – and those negotiations were going well.
The problem for Arsenal was that Tielemans wouldn’t commit to signing this summer without knowing whether the Gunners would be in the Champions League.
Tielemans wants Champions League football – that’s why he has ruled out a Manchester United move.
Arsenal’s talks may have gone well but it may all be for nothing with a top-four finish now looking unlikely.

If Tielemans is snubbing United for not having Champions League action, it stands to reason that he would take the same stance with Arsenal.
That’s a major blow for Arsenal if it proves to be true, but it could actually get even worse.
The London Evening Standard claim that Tottenham have also been tracking Tielemans ahead of a possible move.
Arsenal missing out on the top four would mean Tottenham getting in and being able to offer Tielemans the Champions League football he craves.
Leicester may sell this summer with Tielemans out of contract in 2023, but Arsenal’s chance are taking a major hit whilst Tottenham’s hopes are increasing.
