Arsenal have been strongly linked with Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio – but agent Jorge Mendes is pushing him to Tottenham Hotspur instead.

Reports from Tuttomercatoweb earlier this month suggested that Arsenal have put a ‘rich proposal’ forward to Asensio.

With AC Milan keen, the Italian press were seemingly feeling that Arsenal posed a major threat.

The Sunday Mirror then suggested that Tottenham were being offered the chance to sign Asensio for around £30million.

That rumour is now taking a turn with Calciomercato reporting that Asensio has now switched agents and will now be represented by Jorge Mendes.

That report claims that Mendes is now pushing for Asensio to join Tottenham rather than Arsenal.

Tottenham’s director of football Fabio Paratici is understood to have a strong relationship with agent Mendes.

That’s partly why Nuno Espirito Santo ended up at Tottenham last summer but the less said about that, the better.

Asensio, 26, was once backed for stardom after emerging with Mallorca. Real Madrid swooped in 2014 and and he has now played more than 200 times for Real.

Out of contract in 2023, it looks likely that Asensio will be sold this summer before he can leave for absolutely nothing.

Asensio has been called ‘extraordinary’ by Real boss Carlo Ancelotti, who claims that the winger is negotiating a new deal.

Yet with new agent Mendes seeking a transfer, Real may not be able to keep hold of Asensio much longer.

Do Tottenham really need Asensio though? They already have a quality right-sided, left-footed winger in Dejan Kulusevski.

Adding Asensio would give Tottenham quality options but likely make it a little more difficult for Antonio Conte to juggle his squad.

It still seems hard to imagine that Asensio will be heading to Tottenham, but Mendes often gets his way in the transfer market.
