Newcastle United are growing increasingly hopeful of winning the race to sign sought-after Brentford playmaker Christian Eriksen, against reported interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

That’s according to The Northern Echo, who note the Magpies are ready to blow any rival bidder out the water. Eriksen is a man in high-demand ahead of the summer market, but Newcastle are ready to match or improve any offer the Dane receives to leave Brentford.

The 30-year-old only penned a short-term deal to join the Bees this January for his return to football. Inter Milan agreed to release Eriksen over the winter as he could not continue playing in Serie A unless the midfielder removed the ICD fitted following his cardiac arrest.

Eriksen has since proven he can still compete at a high level with one goal and one assist in five Premier League appearances. The 111-cap maestro also made a goalscoring return to the international stage with two during the March break – his first outings since Euro 2020.

Brentford would love to retain Eriksen beyond the end of the season, but will face battling strong interest from Newcastle. The Toon are firming up their summer spending plans with Eddie Howe, and deem the Dane an exciting option with a proven threat in a free transfer.

Newcastle will significantly increase the salary Eriksen makes at the Brentford Community Stadium with a move to Tyneside, as well. Amanda Staveley will lead negotiations with his representatives if given the chance and sell a dream of a top-six push within a few seasons.

Staveley will additionally namedrop Bruno Guimaraes in her discussions with the Magpies’ potential summer targets after his January arrival. She will hope the Brazilian’s willingness to join Newcastle helps the Tyneside natives seal other deals, like for Brentford’s Eriksen.

United will face a raft of rival Premier League approaches for the Middelfart native. 90min also cite Newcastle as an admirer, along with Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham, Tottenham and West Ham. Foreign clubs are also keen, but he wants to stay in England.

Newcastle’s salary stance could aid Howe’s pursuit of Eriksen, who Brentford boss Thomas Frank hails for his ‘unbelievable’ passing ability. 90min add that while he is not demanding a six-figure wage, the Denmark star wants to see his stature reflected in the terms offered.
