Martin Fraisl is increasingly likely to leave Schalke on a free transfer after Scottish Premiership giants Rangers offered the Austrian goalkeeper a two-year deal at Ibrox, as reported by WAZ

There’s clearly plenty of life left in this old dog.

Allan McGregor has had his critics this season but, since turning 40 in January, the evergreen shot-stopper has set about proving that age is but a number.

McGregor was in a ‘thou shalt not pass’ sort of a mood during Rangers’ UEFA Europa League victory over Red Star Belgrade recently, his penalty save in the first leg just one of many stunning stops he made during the tie.

But not even McGregor can go on forever.

The veteran Scot has shown the odd sign of age in recent months. And Fraisl, a man 12 years McGregor’s junior, is just one of a number of talented goalkeepers tipped to replace a man who made his Gers debut all the way back in 2001/02.

Is Martin Fraisl Rangers’ Allan McGregor replacement?

According to Spox, Rangers have offered Fraisl a two-year deal at Ibrox. The former ADO Den Hag man, who also has admirers in La Liga, Serie A and at Norwich City, will be a free-agent in July.

Fraisl has forced his way into the Schalke XI this season, ousting long-serving number one Ralf Fahrmann. But he continues to divide opinion over in Germany.

According to WAZ, a contract extension ‘is currently not in sight’. Despite director Rouven Schorder’s praise for the ‘excellent’ Fraisl, there are doubts at Schalke as to whether Fraisl is good enough to make the requisite step up should the Gelsenkirchen club seal an immediate return to the Bundesliga this season.

The report adds that Schalke are currently scouring the market for a potential successor.

Rangers have also been linked with Dundee United’s Benjamin Siegrist, St Johnstone’s Zander Clark and West Brom’s Sam Johnstone. All three, like Fraisl, will be out of contract in July.
