Scottish Premiership giants Rangers should choose St Johnstone’s Zander Clark over Dundee United’s Benjamin Siegrist, former Ibrox goalkeeper Cammy Bell tells Football Scotland.

Both are 29 years of age, both are out of contract in the summer and both have a proven track record in the Scottish top-flight.

In truth, there’s very little to separate the two men Rangers have identified as potential Allan McGregor replacements on the blue side of Glasgow.

According to The Mail, Rangers are weighing up a move that would see Siegrist join the club on a free-transfer.

Clark is also on their radar, with St Johnstone boss Callum Davidson admitting this week that he is resigned to losing one of the league’s most reliable shot-stoppers (Record).

Clark, by the way, is a boyhood Rangers fan. One would assume he’d struggle to reject a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fulfil a lifelong dream at the Premiership champions.

Zander Clark or Benjamin Siegrist for Rangers?

But who should Rangers choose? Siegrist or Clark?

According to Bell, Clark’s longevity – not to mention his starring role in St Johnstone’s 2020/21 double-winning campaign – should give him the edge over the former Switzerland U21 international.

“I do think Benji would be a good addition to the squad, especially on a free transfer,” says Bell, who helped Rangers climb the divisions following their demotion to the fourth tier.

“The big question would obviously be what position would he go in as? Would he go in as a number one or number two? To be honest, I don’t see him going in as a number one. I don’t think he’s quite ready for that yet.

“Zander was on the tip of my tongue when we were speaking about Benjamin. They are both of a similar ilk.”

Dundee United hero Lee Wilkie admitted it would be ‘disappointing’ to see Siegrist leave on a free transfer.

St Johnstone would find Clark equally difficult to replace.

Especially if the bottom-of-the-table side drop into the second tier just one year after sealing a historic cup double.

Who will Rangers choose?

“Zander is a fantastic goalkeeper and one that must be on Rangers’ radar, being Scottish and playing so consistently for St Johnstone for such a long period.

“Benjamin has done it for two or three years, Zander has done it for six or seven now,” Bell adds.

“(Zander) is one that could come in and turn into a potential Rangers number one.

“If it was a straight choice, I’d pick Zander Clark because of the longevity he’s done it over.

“Also, the key factors that he’s won trophies in this country, which is difficult to do. Zander has got that winning mentality and winning feeling that you need to have as a Rangers player.

“Ultimately, you are there to win trophies.

“I just think that it would be a good move for Rangers to go and look at him.”
