In his first match back in the Peterborough United hotseat, Grant McCann had his heart set on exacting a measure of revenge on the club who sacked him just a few weeks earlier.

But as the ‘Humberside Hazard’ started to go through his repertoire of tricks, flicks, darting runs and ruthless finishes, McCann’s return to London Road became not about sealing three vital points in Peterborough’s battle against the drop but about trying to keep the score down.

With 50 minutes on the clock, Keane Lewis-Potter doubled Hull City’s lead with a stunning, swerving, scorching shot from long range. If that was a display of his power, then his second of the day showcased his pace.

Lewis-Potter left the Peterborough defenders choking on his dust as he raced through to put the seal on a 3-0 away win. Like a turbo-charged Subaru accelerating beyond a fleet of battered old Fiats and Citroens.

“He showed how good he is – defensively and offensively,” beamed Hull coach Shota Averladze, a pretty decent finisher in his own playing days.

“He got two different goals. The momentum… he just moves so quick. The second one, he takes the ball, carries it alone for 40 or 50 yards and the finish as well.

“A great performance from him. Great two goals.”

Will Keane Lewis-Potter join Bowen at West Ham?

Hull fans will forever be haunted by memories of January 2020, when a then-mid-table side sold star men Jarrod Bowen and Kamil Grosicki and ended up relegated.

There was a very real fear that history was about repeat itself with Lewis-Potter. So the sigh of relief, when the clock struck 11pm on deadline day, could probably be heard from Humberside to the Home Counties.

Even the most optimistic Hull supporter would have to admit though that Lewis-Potter is likely to join Bowen in the Premier League sooner rather than later, however.

It’s a classic case of ‘enjoy him while you can’. Especially if he produces more performances like Saturday’s between now and May.

90Min claim that the £12 million winger is a target for Bowen’s West Ham, a side who also signed Craig Dawson and Said Benrahma from Championship clubs. Brentford have already submitted a £12 million offer.

Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, have opened talks regarding a potential summer swoop.

Ahead of his return to the MKM Stadium, McCann will have told his Peterborough squad repeatedly that stopping Lewis-Potter in his tracks was key to a much-needed win.

Saying it is the easy thing, however. Doing it is another, altogether more difficult challenge.
