Michael Dawson has suggested on Sky Sports News (1:21pm, February 12, 2022) that Tottenham Hotspur have wasted their money on Bryan Gil.

The former Tottenham central defender has suggested that Spurs should have signed a more experienced winger who would have been able to make an immediate impact at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Gil moved to Tottenham from Sevilla in the summer of 2021 for £21.6 million (Sky Sports).

As part of the deal, Argentine winger Erik Lamela switched to the La Liga club.

Gil, 21, returned to Spain in the January transfer window, making the transfer to Valencia on loan until the end of the season.

Dawson said about Gil on Sky Sports News (1:21pm, February 12, 2022): “You paid £20 million+, and you let Lamela go as well as part of the deal.

“So you are looking at £40-£50 million worth of player there and he has gone out on loan six months later.

“It’s obviously for his development, I get that, but you are paying that kind of money, for Spurs, you have to bring a player in who can improve the team, not the squad.”

Bryan Gil a mistake signing for Tottenham Hotspur?

In our view, Tottenham overpaid for Gil.

Yes, the Spain international is only 21 and has potential, but when you consider that he could not even last a season in the Premier League and Spurs had to include Lamela in the transfer to get him, you have to said that Sevilla got the better deal.

Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte himself has said that Gil is not physically strong to play in the Premier League.

Would a few months spend in Spain help him grow in that respect?

Probably not.

Gil made nine substitute appearances in the Premier League and played four times in the Carabao Cup for Tottenham this season before his loan move to Valencia in the January transfer window.
