Alan Shearer has taken to Twitter to give his reaction to Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins having his goal against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park controversially ruled out.

Newcastle have got the better of Villa 1-0 at St. James’ Park in the Premier League this afternoon.

Former Tottenham Hotspur right-back Kieran Trippier, who moved to Newcastle from Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window, scored the only goal of the game in the 35th minute.

However, there was a controversial incident in the second half.

Villa striker Watkins had the ball in the net when he headed home at the far post after after ricochet from a cross from Lucas Digne.

However, VAR ruled it as offside.

Newcastle legend Shearer believes that it was a good decision.

Big win for Newcastle United v Aston Villa

In our view, the win for Newcastle against Villa was huge and could potentially see them survive in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s side are now 17th in the Premier League table with 21 points from 23 matches.

Newcastle are four points above third-from-bottom Norwich City, who have played 24 games.
