Speaking to Liverpool’s official club website, Ian Rush has been discussing the Reds’ new signing Luis Diaz.
The Colombian joined the Reds late in the January window, and Rush is very impressed by the deal to bring the winger to Anfield.
Indeed, the Welshman labelled Diaz as an ‘excellent signing’ despite the fact he’s yet to play a single game in the Premier League.
What’s Rush said about Diaz?
The Reds’ all-time record goalscorer was full of praise for Diaz.
“He’s an excellent signing. I was surprised myself, to tell you the truth, but I think it’s competition for places,” Rush said.
“For me, I think it’s good because it’s competition for places. We’ve got one hell of a forward line now, haven’t we?
“I think [competition] just makes you want to play better. You look at what he’s like in training and if you see if he’s excellent in training, you’ve got to up your own game as well. That’s what it’s all about.
“It’s competition for places. So when you see him training, you’re saying, ‘I’m not guaranteed a game, I’ve got to play well in training, never mind the games.’
“It just gives you competition for places but I think it’s great for the manager. You’ve got to make the manager make the decision.”

So much competition
As Rush says, Diaz’s signing will bring so much competition to this Liverpool frontline, and even if he doesn’t establish himself as a starter, he will push the likes of Sadio Mane to another level.
Diaz may well be one for the future rather than a player who is expected to make a big impact right now. After all, he’s just turned 25, but regardless of his age, he will be breathing down Mane’s neck for the foreseeable future.
This is a signing that Liverpool supporters should be very excited about.
