Newcastle United Head of Recruitment Steve Nickson wanted to sign Mohammed Salisu from Southampton in the January transfer window, according to The Athletic.

The Athletic have reported this morning that Southampton defender Salisu is a player that Nickson had on his radar in previous transfer windows.

The report has suggested that Nickson was looking at bringing the £10.9 million central defender (Sky Sports) to Newcastle in the January transfer window as well.

“The vast majority of the players on Newcastle’s wanted list had been identified by Nickson, with many targets even mentioned in previous windows, such as Mohammed Salisu, the Southampton defender, while he also held preliminary discussions with agents,” states the report in The Athletic.

Newcastle should continue to monitor Mohammed Salisu

In our view, Newcastle should continue to monitor Salisu for the rest of the season and maybe put in a bid for the defender in the summer of 2022.

Yes, the Magpies signed Dan Burn from Brighton and Hove Albion on January transfer deadline day, but there is always room for more quality players in the squad.

Especially if Newcastle escape the dreaded drop to the Championship at the end of the season.

Salisu is only 22, and, in our view, he will get better and improve in the coming years.

Newcastle are a very attractive and appealing club now, and a good offer from the Magpies in the summer of 2022 could be tempting for both Southampton and Salisu.
