Tottenham Hotspur did explore a move for Atletico Madrid winger Yannick Carrasco – but his release clause actually expired earlier this month.

That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that Carrasco will not be leaving Atletico for England before tonight’s deadline.

It’s stated that Atletico’s stance is that there is no chance of a deal being done this close to the window closing.

Additionally, a release clause in Carrasco’s contract is claimed to have expired just days ago.

That means Premier League clubs can’t force through a last-gasp raid on Atletico, which is what Arsenal did for Thomas Partey in 2020.

Atletico may be open to a summer move, but Tottenham will now have to wait if they still want to bring Carrasco to London.

Foot Mercato reported earlier on deadline day that both Newcastle United and Tottenham had initiated talks to sign Carrasco.

They suggested that the £50million release clause still stood in Carrasco’s deal, which now appears to be incorrect.

Newcastle have been linked with every player under the sun this month, and Carrasco would have market an enormous coup.

The 28-year-old has hit two goals and five assists in 20 games this season, continuing to shine under Diego Simeone.

Tottenham’s interest is intriguing, as Antonio Conte may have actually fancied Carrasco as a wing back at Spurs.

Carrasco is mostly known as a left sided winger, cutting onto his right foot in the final third. That style has resulted in Someone calling Carrasco’s dribbling ‘incredible’.

On the international stage though, Carrasco has played as a wing back for Belgium, showing the versatility Conte may like.

Tottenham have been searching for a right wing back this month and Carrasco can even play on the left, offering a solution on both sides for Conte.

Carrasco is certainly a name for Tottenham fans to keep an eye on moving forward, even if no deal will be done today.
