Tottenham Hotspur have failed to sign Luis Diaz, with the player electing to join Liverpool instead.

According to Record, the Colombia international has rejected a transfer to Tottenham in favour of signing for their Premier League rivals at Anfield.

Liverpool are now set to bring the Porto attacker to Merseyside over the coming days, before Monday’s transfer deadline.

It’s a devastating blow for Spurs in light of their failure to also sign Adama Traore, who is bound for Barcelona.

However, one figure at Hotspur Way who could and should be relieved is Ryan Sessegnon.

The 21-year-old is slowly but surely establishing a grip of things since Antonio Conte arrived in North London.

The former Fulham prospect started the 2-0 defeat by Chelsea last time around.

Sessegnon was only playing because Sergio Reguilon was injured, and if Son Heung-min had been fit then Steven Bergwijn wouldn’t have played so advanced either.

The point is, Sessegnon, a £20 million signing in 2019, is already in something of purgatory under Conte.

At the moment, he is close enough to the top of the pecking order where he will get chances to impress the Italian manager and hopefully earn further opportunities.

However, he is simultaneously low enough in the pecking order to the point where if Liverpool hadn’t intervened, and Tottenham signed Diaz, it would’ve been a coffin nail in the Englishman’s hopes of ever playing regularly in North London.

Diaz is a left-sided attacker but Traore would’ve been converted into a wing-back had Conte signed the Spain international and, logically, the same plan was in place for the South American.

If not for the Reds, there’s a very good chance that Diaz would be bound for the Lilywhites but because he’s going to Merseyside, Sessegnon lives to fight another day under Conte.
