Gianfranco Zola has shared that Antonio Conte told him that Tottenham ‘need more depth’ in the middle of the park, as he told Premier League Productions (23/01/22 at 7:20 pm).

The Chelsea legend also claimed that Tottenham need a Christian Eriksen-like player to add more goals and quality to their midfield.

On Sunday, Spurs were eased away by Chelsea in the Premier League, as they suffered a fourth straight defeat to their London rivals this season.

Even though Conte changed systems in order to get the better of his former club, it still didn’t work out and they walked away empty-handed.

Zola was at Stamford Bridge to watch both teams in action and he was seen hugging and talking to Conte after the game.

The former Italy international shared what his fellow countryman told him about Tottenham when in conversation with him.

“We were just talking about that,” said Zola. “He realises that to be top four in this country, you need quality.

“We were just talking about that. There was different quality in the last 20 meters (compared with Chelsea) and this is what makes the difference from being mid-table to top table. But he knows that. He will make the team better.

“I think in midfield, they need to have more depth. Right now, he told me that he doesn’t have many players. And not many options. I think they also need a different type of player in midfield, in my opinion.

“They probably need a midfielder that can provide goals, like Eriksen used to do for them before. This is the type of player, in my opinion, they need very much.”

It’s the final week of the January transfer window and Spurs are yet to make any real moves in the market.

Conte has made it clear that he would like quality added to his squad, but there hasn’t been any movement yet.

Whilst someone like Adama Traore has been mooted as a possible first signing under the Conte reign, there is also a lot of noise around who could leave.

Even though both players were fit and available, Dele Alli and Giovani Lo Celso were left out of the Chelsea visit, which is perhaps a sign that their days at the club are numbered.
