Steven Bergwijn’s return to Ajax appears off after the Tottenham Hotspur winger’s heroic performance in the 3-2 Premier League win at Leicester City, Dutch journalist Freek Janssen tells the Pak Schaal Podcast.

When the £27 million Dutch international came off the bench at the King Power Stadium on Wednesday night, it was tempting to wonder if we were witnessing the final, flickering embers of his Spurs career.

Ajax failed with an initial £15 million bid earlier in the January transfer window (The Times).

The Amsterdam giants were preparing a new bid, however. And with the ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano reporting that Tottenham were ready to let Bergwijn go, the smart money was on the 24-year-old returning to his native Netherlands before the February deadline.

But if his last-gasp double in the East Midlands salved a win from the draws of defeat, it also appears to have salved a Premier League future from the jaws of a January departure.

“(Ajax) have made several offers and (Tottenham) have all rejected them,” explains Janssen, translated by Voetbal Primeur.

Bergwijn scored more goals in 80 seconds at Leicester than he managed in his last 37 league games. A run that dates all the way back to June 2020.

What now for Steven Bergwijn at Tottenham?

“(Sporting director Marc) Overmars and Ajax are not crazy. If they get those signals, that player is not coming.

“He literally took care of the three points all on his own. (Tottenham) now think: ‘Why would we ever let him leave?’.

“He also has a contract until mid-2025. So (a move) is only possible if he is going to force something himself. However, he will not do that.”

In the aftermath of the most remarkable of Premier League fixtures – Tottenham were 2-1 down in the 94th minute and 3-2 up in the 97th – Conte told Sky Sports that Bergwijn remains an ‘important’ part of his plans.

The Dutchman’s agent ruled out a move to Napoli recently while Feyenoord also distanced themselves from the former PSV talisman.
