Feyenoord’s technical director Frank Arnesen has ruled out a move to De Kuip for Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League winger Steven Bergwijn, speaking to Voetbal International.

There are only six points separating Feyenoord and Ajax in the Eredivisie table.

But, as far as finances are concerned, the gap between two of the biggest clubs in Dutch football is a veritable chasm the size of the Grand Canyon.

A case in point; Ajax failed with a £15 million bid for Bergwijn next week (The Times).

But, refusing to take no for an answer, they will return with another offer in the coming days. One that could see the Netherlands international replace Sebastien Haller as the most expensive signing in their storied, trophy-laden history.

Feyenoord, in contrast, have never paid more than £7 million for a single player.

The Rotterdam giants were pipped to the post by table-topping PSV Eindhoven for the signature of Joey Veerman a fortnight ago.

And while Spurs go back in for Bergwijn, Feyenoord have paid just £2.7 million for a new winger of their own.

Will Steven Bergwijn leave Spurs for Ajax?

“(Ajax) are looking (for players) a few levels higher,” said Arnesen, who had a brief spell as Spurs’ sporting director nearly two decades ago.

“Those who think of Steven Bergwijn…Unfeasible for us, but we are happy with Walemark.”

How much will Bergwijn cost?

Patrick Walemark, a £2.7 million signing from Swedish outfit BK Haken, sealed his move to Feyenoord recently. Bergwijn will reportedly join him in the Netherlands before the month is out.

Alongside Ajax, Bergwijn is also linked with a mid-season move to Serie A.

The forward’s agent rubbished reports linking Bergwijn with a move to Napoli, however, insisting that there is ‘nothing’ in reports suggesting that he could be on his way to the Stadio San Paolo.

“Seeing him at Napoli would be an honour,” says Francesco Miniero, a representative of the Dutch-based Muy Manero agency (Calciomercato).

“But there is really nothing.”
