Former Rangers target Lewis Ferguson is wanted by Serie A side Cagliari, who have set their sights on the Scottish international as a January signing.

According to Sky Italia via TuttoMercatoWeb, the Sardinian-based club are keen to sign a midfielder this month, with Ferguson now on Cagliari’s radar as a potential recruitment.

Ferguson has enjoyed another brilliant season with Aberdeen. The 22-year-old has bagged eight goals in all competitions and was labelled by Dons teammate Cristian Ramirez as a player with ‘swagger’.

Indeed, Rangers tried to sign Ferguson last summer as per the Scottish Sun. However, after Aberdeen rejected a £2m bid from Watford, no move to Glasgow ever materialised for the box-to-box midfielder.

With Rangers missing out on Ferguson in the summer, though, it has given Cagliari a clear shot at signing the SPL superstar this month. As per the report, the Serie A side will make a loan offer for the midfielder with an obligation to buy.

With the likes of Aaron Hickey flourishing in Italy, Cagliari could be a good move for Ferguson this January. Yet for Rangers, they will be kicking themselves for missing out on the Scotland international.

Cagliari target Ferguson could have led Rangers midfield for years

Whilst Rangers have already made a midfield signing this January in the form of James Sands, there’s no denying that Ferguson, who could join Cagliari soon, would have been a perfect recruitment for the position.

After all, the Aberdeen star knows the SPL better than most players. And at 22, Ferguson has the potential to become the next great Scottish export from the division if he continues to develop at the pace he is at.
