Newcastle are reportedly battling West Ham to sign Inter Milan star Alexis Sanchez, with a fee of £6million touted. Back in 2015, Steve Bruce branded the 144-time Chile star as “world class” and “up there with the best”.

Sanchez, 33, is slowly reigniting his form at Inter Milan – scoring two goals and laying on an assist in Inter’s last five Serie A games. He is impressing in a two-man partnership with fellow veteran attacker Edin Dzeko.

But having entered the final 18 months of his contract, the ex-Arsenal and Manchester United man could be allowed to go. La Tercera claims that Newcastle and West Ham are eyeing a surprise £6million move for Sanchez.

Back in 2015, having watched Sanchez tear apart is Hull side with a goal and an assist in a 2-0 FA Cup win – ex-Toon boss Bruce raved about Sanchez. He said Sanchez is world class, and as good as Sergio Aguero.

“Sanchez’s appetite and desire is what every player should be looking for. That’s what makes world class players and that makes him up there with the best. Sanchez is right up there with Sergio Aguero,” as per the Sun.

Bruce on Sanchez: Could Chilean legend keep Newcastle up?

Sanchez has the big-name reputation and Premier League experience to fire Newcastle to safety – at his best. But at 33, is he now past it? Is Sanchez going to put the work in that is necessary in a relegation scrap?

At £6million, there is no doubt that it is a risk worth taking. Ideally, Newcastle should attempt to land Sanchez on a loan-to-buy basis in case he does not have the desired impact. But he could, and probably should.
