Borussia Monchengladbach could let reported Celtic target Hannes Wolf leave the Bundesliga club this week, sporting director Max Eberl tells FH.

Erling Haaland, Sadio Mane, Naby Keita, Hwang Hee-Chan, Takumi Minamino, Patson Daka, Dominik Szoboszlai; The Red Bull Salzburg finishing school churns out almost as many money-spinning successes as Marvel these days.

But if Haaland is football’s cocky, wise-cracking Iron Man, then what is Hannes Wolf?

He’s played just eight minutes of Bundesliga football in Gladbach’s last 13 games. The Austria U21 international must be starting to feel like Edward Norton in 2008’s misguided The Incredible Hulk.

An awkward outlier amongst his far more successful counterparts.

BILD reported before Christmas that Scottish Premiership challengers Celtic had shown an interest in Wolf; a versatile, hard-working forward in the Ange Postecoglou mould.

And Eberl is unlikely to stand in the 22-year-old’s way if Celtic come calling between now and February deadline.

“Something might happen to him in the next few days,” Eberl admits. “We’ll see whether it’s a loan or a sale when the time comes.”

Will Celtic sign Bundesliga benchwarmer Hannes Wolf?

Interestingly, Wolf, an £8 million signing from RB Leipzig, actually started the season in Adi Hutter’s XI.

That was until he was hauled off at half-time during a 2-1 defeat to high-flying, coupon-busting Union Berlin at the end of August. Wolf hasn’t started another match since.

It’s not certain whether Wolf, who emerged as a target for Everton while taking Austrian football by storm with Salzburg, will ever play another Bundesliga game for Die Fohlen.

Whether Celtic are still interested is also up for debate.

The Glasgow giants were linked in the autumn, before bringing in Daizen Maeda from Japanese football.

Postecoglou now has James Forrest, Liel Abada, Kyogo Furuhashi, Mikey Johnston, Filipe Jota and Maeda to choose from in a stocked forward line.

Then again, a reported attempt to hi-jack Patrick Roberts’ move to Sunderland suggests there may be room at Parkhead for a new attacker after all.
