Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Aston Villa have an ‘agreement in place’ to sign Robin Olsen on loan from Roma.

Olsen has been on loan at Sheffield United over the first half of the 2021/22 campaign.

He came in as the no.1 keeper at Bramall Lane and made 11 league appearances in a row between mid-September and early November.

However, he hasn’t featured in any of the Blades’ last five Championship matches, with former Rangers stopper Wes Foderingham excelling in his absence.

Villa have been linked with the 32-year-old since a move for West Ham’s Darren Randolph collapsed and it’s thought that Olsen will serve as a backup for current no.1 Emiliano Martinez.

On Thursday, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claimed that Villa had agreed personal terms with Olsen but that Sheffield United were yet to decide whether or not they were willing to let him go.

However, on Friday evening, Romano issued a fresh update, which asserted that the deal is as good as complete.

‘Robin Olsen from Sheffield to Aston Villa now at final stages, agreement in place,’ he wrote on Twitter. ‘Last details to be resolved.’

‘AS Roma will cancel loan to Sheffield and then will let Olsen join Aston Villa until the end of the season. Olsen already agreed personal terms with Villa.’

Olsen a good option for Villa?

It looks like Olsen will soon become a Villa player, at least on a temporary basis, and it’s a decent move from Steven Gerrard.

The 32-year-old is very experienced, with over 50 international caps to his name, and some good clubs on his CV.

He’s won league titles in Sweden and Denmark with Malmo and FC Copenhagen respectively and he’s played in major championships.

At 6ft 5″, he’s an imposing presence between the sticks and would be a safe option to bring into the side any time Martinez is unavailable due to injury or illness.
