Next summer, the contracts of two of Rangers’ most influential players will expire.
But while Steven Davis’ influence has waned somewhat as he approaches his 37th birthday, the same certainly can’t be said of Allan McGregor.
McGregor will be 40 on 31 January but, as far as the Rangers faithful are concerned, 40 is the new 30.
If Sunday’s performance during the 2-0 win at Hearts is anything to go by, there’s plenty of life left in this grizzled old hound.
McGregor was, in the words of Heart of Midlothian boss Robbie Neilson, in ‘inspired form’ at Tynecastle, denying Liam Boyce twice in the first-half before making a superb double-save in the second.
The Daily Record reported last month that Rangers had identified Zander Clark as a potential replacement for McGregor at Ibrox. That, however, is assuming McGregor needs replacing at all.
Age is but a number after all and the four-time Premiership champion is currently playing some of the best football of his career.
Rangers have conceded more goals this term than they did in the whole of 2020/21. But, if it wasn’t for McGregor, the gap between themselves and Celtic at the top of the table would be a lot closer.

Is Zander Clark leaving St Johnstone for Rangers?
As for Clark, it’s fair to say he hardly calmed the fears of St Johnstone supporters when quizzed on his future at McDiarmid Park.
“That (contract talks) is all going on in the background,” said Clark, Glasgow-born and Rangers-raised.
“I let other people deal with it and I just focus on what I need to do. I just try to put in good performances and help get points on board for the team.”
“That is enough for me. It’s not at the forefront of my mind. I will find out when anything happens. I am still a St Johnstone player and my full focus is on doing the best I can for this club. That has always been my aim.”
