AS Roma have reignited their interest in Arsenal star Granit Xhaka, with Jose Mourinho’s side set to target the Swiss international in the summer.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian side will go back in for the 29-year-old after failing to sign the midfielder in 2021. Roma were heavily linked with Xhaka and personal terms were even agreed. However, Arsenal were not happy with the finances of the deal.
Since then, Xhaka signed a contract extension with the Gunners and missed almost three months worth of action due to injury, with the former Bundesliga star currently out through Covid-19.
Indeed, Xhaka’s saga in the summer was a conflicting subject between Arsenal fans, with some supporters eager for the midfielder to leave whilst others wanted the Swiss captain to remain.
Despite a disastrous performance against Manchester City in August and giving away a penalty in the reverse fixture last week, Xhaka’s performances have largely been good, with the midfielder proving to be an ideal partner for Thomas Partey.
However, with the club targeting a midfielder this window, the summer could once again prove to be an ideal time to sell Xhaka for good after joining the club in 2016 for a reported fee of £35m, especially with Roma sniffing about.
Arsenal should bow to Roma’s demands to sell Xhaka this summer

Arsenal’s inability to sell Xhaka last summer was a fiasco that drove many supporters insane, with the midfielder viewed as a player who symbolises most of what is wrong with the club since Arsene Wenger left in 2018.
And this summer, with the Gunners eager to sign a midfielder, the north London side can’t afford to make the same mistake twice regarding Xhaka and Roma.
Whilst performances have been good, it would make sense to find a more suitable partner for Partey as well as a player on the younger side of the spectrum.
