Hearts and Scotland star John Souttar has not ruled out a move to Premiership champions Rangers though his priority remains an English club during the January transfer window, as reported by the Edinburgh News.

What would you choose? Silverware and European football at Ibrox, or the chance to potentially play Premier League football south of the border?

It’s not an easy decision to make. Souttar, then, will have plenty to ponder during the next few weeks as he weighs up his future at club level.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers are in the market for a new central defender with both Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun out of contract.

Filip Helander is also due to become a free-agent within the next 18 months while Jack Simpson remains out of favour.

Souttar, given his proven track record in Scottish football and his impressive passing range, would fit in rather nicely at Ibrox.

Will John Souttar join Rangers?

The Sun reported back in November that Rangers were eyeing up a deal that would see the former Dundee United stopper sign a pre-contract agreement with the Glasgow giants.

It is understood however that, after spending the entirety of his career in Scotland, Souttar is intrigued by the prospect of trying his hand on English soil.

Blackburn Rovers, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough have all been linked, as have a Stoke City side with Souttar’s younger brother Harry already on their books.

The Edinburgh News reports that the Aberdeen-born 25-year-old is planning to open talks with potential suitors over the coming days.

He has not ruled out making the near-50 mile journey from Edinburgh to Glasgow either, even if a move to England remains his priority at this stage.

Hearts boss Robbie Neilson said recently that anyone wishing to take Souttar away from Tynecastle during the January window would have to part with a ‘huge’ fee.

Reports have suggested, however, that a bid in the region of just £500,000 could do the trick.
