Vitesse Arnhem captain Danilho Doekhi has confirmed that Rangers are interested in adding him to their Scottish Premiership-winning squad, speaking to GLD.

Following the appointment of Giovanni van Bronckhorst as Steven Gerrard’s replacement before Christmas, the Rangers supporters identified none other than Doekhi as a likely first signing of a new era at Ibrox.

That might have had something to do with the fact that the Eredivisie stopper had been heavily linked with a move to Glasgow a few months prior.

According to Dutch publication De Gelderlander, Rangers would have offered Doekhi a three-year deal at Ibrox last summer, before he instead decided to sign a new contract with Vitesse.

But with both Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun out of contract – and with doubts surrounding Jack Simpson’s future – Rangers may have no choice but to enter the market for defensive reinforcements sooner rather than later.

Which, as some predicted, could lead them back to Doekhi.

Will Rangers finally land Danilho Doekhi?

“They follow me,” the 23-year-old said when asked about Rangers’ interest. “But there are several clubs (who are interested).”

Any Rangers supporters who are hoping to see Doekhi arrive over the next three weeks should not hold their breath, however. The one-time Ajax youngster is staying at the Gelredome until the summer.

“The fans don’t have to worry about me leaving yet,” Doekhi adds. “To my knowledge, there has not yet been a club that has reported (their interest) to Vitesse.

“And I myself am not fond of a winter transfer. (But) when a big club comes up with a good plan, it’s hard to say no. So it also depends.

“I simply assume that I will still be playing at Vitesse for the next six months.”

Don’t expect any imminent news on this front, then.

But while Doekhi can be placed on the backburner for now, Rangers do seem to be making progress in their pursuit of Denmark international Andreas Skov Olsen.

According to reports in Italy, Rangers have made a bid in the region of £5 million for the Bologna winger.
