Speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, Chris Sutton has been discussing Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger amid his links to Tottenham Hotspur and numerous other clubs.

Rudiger is out of contract in the summer, and sadly for Chelsea, it seems as though he could be off to play his football elsewhere.

There’s plenty of interest in Rudiger and Tottenham are apparently one of the teams keen on the German centre-half.

Sutton believes that Rudiger’s departure will really hurt Chelsea, labelling him a ‘phenomenal’ defender.

What’s been said about Rudiger?

Sutton had plenty of good things to say about the defender.

“Absolutely, I think he’s Chelsea’s best defender, I really do. I never understood with Frank Lampard why he didn’t play Rudiger regularly. I don’t know whether he clashed, but he’s going to be a big loss to Chelsea. I think he’s a phenomenal defender. How are they going to replace him? How much is it going to cost to replace Rudiger?” Sutton said.

Chelsea’s loss, Spurs’ gain?

Sutton is absolutely right about Rudiger, Chelsea will struggle to replace him, but will the Blues’ loss be Spurs’ gain?

Tottenham are keen on the defender, and the player knows Antonio Conte well from his time at Stamford Bridge, so a deal would make a fair bit of sense.

However, unfortunately for Spurs, Real Madrid are also keen on the German international, and when Los Blancos come calling, it’s tough for any player to say no.

Rudiger is certainly a player to keep an eye on as his contract winds down.
