Aaron Ramsey is ‘99 per cent sure’ to leave Juventus before the January transfer window closes in three weeks’ time. And this is not merely regurgitated speculation from some desperate, gossip-chugging Italian daily.

This is news straight from the horses’ mouth. Or, more accurately, Max Allegri’s mouth.

“Aaron Ramsey is now set to leave Juventus,” the Bianconeri coach said on Wednesday, via Fabrizio Romano.

“We’re working on it. This is 99 per cent sure.”

If Ramsey is all-but certain to be packing his bags and booking an Uber to Turin Airport, what are the chances of Tyneside being his destination? Not quite 99 per cent, perhaps, but the number is still a rather large one.

According to Dean Jones of Eurosport, Newcastle United are in contact with the Wales international and are understood to have put a ‘serious proposal’ on the table.

Ramsey turned down a move to Burnley earlier this week, via Gianluca di Marzio, but while Newcastle are one place lower in the Premier League table than their claret-clad relegation rivals, this feels like a very different kind of opportunity.

Is Aaron Ramsey signing for Newcastle?

You might have heard that Newcastle, with their new £500 billion Saudi Arabian owners, are thinking big these days.

They’re spending big too, on big names as well.

Kieran Trippier will become the first new signing of the PIF regime and, according to The Telegraph, Newcastle are growing more and more confident that a £30 million deal for Everton outcast Lucas Digne can be agreed too.

That’s two elite-level full-backs – with proven Premier League track records – arriving to reinforce two positions where Newcastle are hardly overloaded with quality.

Did we mention that Sven Botman, one of Europe’s best young centre-halves and a reigning Ligue 1 champion to boot, is reported to be ‘fascinated’ by Newcastle’s pioneering project.

Add Ramsey to the mix and suddenly the gap between the relegation zone and the dizzying heights of mid-table feels very much bridge-able.

Did we mention that Ramsey will be available for absolutely nothing? Juventus are so desperate to get him off the wage bill that they will jump at the chance to terminate his £400,000 contract at the earliest opportunity.
