Tottenham have missed out on signing Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne with Fabrizio Romano confirming that the winger has signed a contract with Toronto FC.

Taking to his official Twitter account, the Italian journalist announced that the 30-year-old attacker has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with the MLS franchise. Insigne will join Toronto in the summer on a free transfer.

As reported by 90min, Tottenham were keen to sign Insigne this month, with both Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici fans of the Euro 2020 winner.

However, Toronto have won the race for the Italian international, with the likes of Newcastle United and Everton also linked with Insigne.

Indeed, it is a momentous signing for both Toronto as a club and MLS as a league. Insigne is likely to become one of the highest-paid players in North America and potentially the best earner in the history of the division.

As for Tottenham, losing out on Insigne is a huge blow given which side have beaten the north London side to the Serie A superstar.

There’s no question about it, Spurs should be beating a club like Toronto to a player with the quality of Insigne.

The Italian international is in the prime of his career and off the back of a career-defining tournament in Euro 2020. And Tottenham missing out on a club that finished 13th in their division last season is nothing short of embarrassing from the north London side.
